Q&A: Should a deaf relative have a “say” if you decide to give your child a cochlear implant?

Question by icon wink Q&A: Should a deaf relative have a say if you decide to give your child a cochlear implant? : Should a deaf relative have a “say” if you decide to give your child a cochlear implant?
I know someone who has a deaf sister in law. The sister in law lost her hearing as a result of the mothers negligence and chronic ear infections. The lady I know has a child that is about to put a cochlear implant on her child, but the aunt of the child is oppose to it, and is vehemently against such devices (even though the aunt wears a hearing aid in her “good” ear). My friend is giving her child the advantages of a hearing world. The aunt is “threatening” to take the mother to court for custody if she goes through with the surgery. The mother has told said aunt to mind her own business, and let her do what she deems best for her child. The aunt in this situation has NEVER worked a day in her life, still lives with her mother, and lives on disability.

So my question to those of you with a deaf or hard of hearing child, should this aunt have a ‘say’ in what happens to her nephew? Or Should she just mind her own business?

Please be tactful. Thanks.

I think her argument has validity if she is part of the deaf community, but in the end only the parents have a say about this.
